I think that the economy is pushing Companies to make a great discounts and use their email marketing channel to let users know about great deals. Here is an example of the today’s JCPenney email:
Actually, JCPennys and the likes, are managed based on the number of times they can turn their inventory in a given cycle. Each new season provides a new set of inventory space that needs to be planned for. Their clearance sales are an attempt to clear space for the new products that are coming rather then loosing money by shipping everything back to regional distribution centers only to rot there.
JCPennys has these types of sales several times a year, and have for decades. (My mother use to work for them for almost 20 years) They did a poor job promoting these events, I’m glad to see they are using email marketing to push them.
